The WWF’s support, the Voice for Just Climate Action (VCA) "Climate Action for Resilient Ecosystems, Communities, and Wildlife," project in the Baringo Landscape has been instrumental in restoration efforts and driving Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to combat climate change while enhancing livelihoods and environmental sustainability in Baringo County.

In the first tranche, BCCA successfully restored 10 acres of degraded land in Kiborgoch- a milestone in our rangeland rehabilitation journey.

The second tranche, BCCA expanded restoration efforts by adding 10 more acres of degraded land at Kiborgoch Conservancy, including removing invasive Prosopis juliflora, installing traditional bush fencing, chiseling the land to boost water retention and seed germination, and planting 4000 aloe seeds. Further, it supported the Kapkuikui Self Help Group, Tuiyarus Conservancy, and Chepkoimet Women Group in establishing grass seed banks across 10 acres as part of a larger landscape restoration effort to provide sustainable fodder for the Endorois community, which is primarily composed of pastoralists dependent on livestock for their livelihoods. Further, three key springs were identified through Satellite imagery, which aided in mapping and assessing these springs for restoration due to their degradation, aimed to promote clean water for livestock, households, and wildlife. A total of 4,000 indigenous tree seedlings were planted at Churo, Chepkurwo, and Bechelolong springs in Kaptuya, Morop, and Irong conservancies, respectively. Additionally, nine schools identified within our conservancies planted 1,500 indigenous tree seedlings to enhance tree cover and promote conservation education among students.

To promote women's empowerment and support food security, BCCA, through its conservancy’s Women’s Caucus, helped 16 women's groups plant 3,450 grafted fruit tree seedlings, including mangoes and Hass avocados, fostering agroforestry and enhancing household incomes through fruit production.

In the 3rd tranche, the water Solarization project in Kiborgoch with 350 Watts at 750 volts output, 2 storage tanks, 2.7 kW pump, and 4km water pumping to the restoration site has been done with the commissioning and handover of the project done through BCCA.

These upscaling efforts are more than environmental wins- they are lifelines of resilience for communities at the frontline of climate change. As we come to the closeout, we aim to further upscale the initiative.
